I remember growing up on beaches of the Atlantic Beach on the, south shore of Long island, where families who lived on the inland would flock (yes flock!) to the beaches for the summers with their families. Many rented cabanas for the entire summer and moved in, sleeping there the entire summer. The dads would head back to the city during the week to work, and then come back for weekends and holidays.
The moms hung out while their kids all played together in the sand from dawn to dusk. The camaraderie was great, and the friendships that were made lasted lifetime. But these cabanas weren’t free, and each year the prices went up, with the beach club owner reaping the profits.
My Dad tells me a similar story… He spent his summers on the Shore of Boston. Dads would head back to Boston, while the moms took the kids to Paragon Park.
